In short
- MACD = fast EMA − slow EMA: the gap between recent and older consensus, plotted.
- Three readings: zero-line (direction context), signal crossings (momentum gear-shifts), divergence (fading acceleration).
- Double-smoothed = double-lagged: MACD describes acceleration that already happened.
- Unbounded, asset-specific values — and ranging regimes whipsaw it like any MA tool.
After this lesson you can
- Explain what the MACD line is built from and what it measures
- Read the three classic MACD signals: zero-line, signal-line crossings, and divergence
- Explain why MACD inherits — and doubles — the lag of its moving averages
Built from the last lesson's parts
Take two exponential moving averages of price — a fast one (conventionally 12 periods) and a slow one (26). In an accelerating trend the fast EMA pulls AWAY from the slow; as momentum fades, the gap narrows. MACD simply plots that gap as its own line: MACD = fast EMA − slow EMA. Above zero, the fast consensus sits above the slow (recent strength); below zero, the mirror. A second line — the signal (conventionally a 9-period EMA OF the MACD itself) — smooths the gap so its turns are readable. MACD is not new information: it is the moving-averages lesson, differentiated — measuring how the averages are moving relative to each other.
Key point: MACD = the gap between fast and slow consensus. Widening gap = accelerating move; narrowing gap = momentum fading.
The three classic readings
Zero-line crossings: MACD above zero means the fast EMA leads the slow — trend-direction context (slowest, most confirmed, most lagged). Signal-line crossings: MACD turning through its own smoothed self — momentum shifting gear (faster, noisier). Divergence: price grinding to a new high while MACD prints a lower high — the move continuing on fading acceleration. The RSI lesson's divergence caveat transfers verbatim: divergence flags weakening, and weakening can persist for a long time before mattering. All three are momentum testimony, strongest when the regime and volume corroborate.
Common trap: forgetting it is averages of averages
MACD's authority comes from smoothing — and so does its weakness. It is built from two lagging EMAs, then its signal line smooths AGAIN: every reading describes acceleration that already happened. In fast reversals MACD confirms the turn well after the candle chart screamed it; in ranging regimes its crossings whipsaw exactly like raw MA crossovers (same disease, inherited). And its VALUES are unbounded and asset-specific — a MACD of 2.5 means nothing across assets, unlike RSI's fixed 0–100 scale. Use it as a momentum LENS layered on structure — never as an oracle with a hotline to the future.
